How to Change the Oil on Your Honda Type R (EP3, FN2, FK2 & FK8) – A DIY Guide for Peak Performance
Regular oil changes are one of the most important things you can do to keep your Honda Type R running at its best. Whether you drive an EP3, FN2, FK2 or FK8, fresh oil helps protect your high-revving VTEC engine, maximises power, and extends engine life.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to change your oil properly and recommend the best products to use. If you're looking for quality oil, filters, and service kits for your Type R, you can find everything you need at Type Two Online.
Why Regular Oil Changes Matter for Type R Owners
The K20 and K24 engines found in many Type R models are built to be driven hard. That means high RPMs, heat, and stress on engine components. Over time, oil breaks down, collects contaminants, and loses its ability to lubricate and protect your engine.
Changing your oil every 3,000–5,000 miles (or 5,000–8,000 km) is especially important if you track your car or drive it enthusiastically on the road.
What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these essentials:
-
Engine oil: For most K-series Type R models, use 5W-40 or 5W-30 fully synthetic oil. We recommend Motul 8100 X-Cess or HKS Super Oil, available at Type Two Online.
-
Oil filter: A genuine Honda filter or quality aftermarket brand like HAMP or K&N.
-
Crush washer: Always replace the sump washer to prevent leaks.
-
Oil catch pan, funnel, socket set, and jack & axle stands (or a ramp).

Step-by-Step: How to Change Your Oil on a Type R
1. Warm the Engine
Start the car and let it run for 5–10 minutes. Warm oil flows better and drains more effectively.
2. Raise the Car Safely
Use a jack and secure the vehicle on axle stands, or drive onto ramps for better access underneath.
3. Drain the Old Oil
Place your catch pan under the sump. Remove the 17mm sump bolt and let the oil drain fully. Be careful – the oil may be hot!
4. Replace the Crush Washer & Refit the Bolt
Remove the old washer from the sump bolt and install a new one. Torque the bolt to 30 lb-ft (40 Nm).
5. Remove the Old Oil Filter
Unscrew the old filter by hand or use an oil filter wrench. Make sure the rubber seal comes off with it.
6. Install the New Filter
Lightly coat the rubber seal of the new filter with fresh oil and screw it on hand-tight – about ¾ of a turn after it seats.
7. Refill with Fresh Oil
Pour in around 4.5 litres of oil (varies by model – check your handbook). Use a funnel to avoid spills.
8. Start the Engine & Check Levels
Run the engine for 30 seconds. Check for leaks. Then wait a few minutes and check the oil level on the dipstick. Top up as needed.
